The Vintage Folk Rock Kit is the first kit to use version 2 of the Drumdrops Kontakt Instrument. This new instrument has been designed and rebuilt from the ground up. Gone is the step sequencer but in are loads more effects and a much more customisable v-drum midi map section. The instrument provides the user with complete control over each of the drums with the inbuilt mixer. With our mic mixer feature you can adjust the mix of each of the 5 mics used to record the kit on each drum. It gives you absolute control. The instrument also allows you to add convolution reverbs that have been sampled from a variety of the studios and outboard we use as well as two delay settings.
To increase the realism of the overall sound we have included multiple round robin samples which utilises the 16400 included samples and there is also a randomisation tool. Each channel has a 4 band equalizer, a compressor, shape feature and tape saturation. The stereo buss comes with its own compressor, limiter, EQ, Crush and image tools. It comes with a selection of MIDI maps including full compatibility with Roland V-drums and the DTX900. However the new kontakt instrument also allows drummers to build their own custom MIDI maps to suit their kit perfectly.
This pack is perfect for Producers, Engineers, Drummers, songwriters and musicians who want the highest level of realism and are users of the latest full version of kontakt 5.5 (not kontakt player)
The Drumdrops mixer gives you total control over the individual drums, cymbals and percussion. Each drum is on a fader giving you total control of the levels of the kit. Each channel can be solo'd, muted or panned and routed to seperate outputs in your DAW. Each fader is accompanied with an LED meter. You can easily scroll between faders 1-8 and 9-11.
In the upper part of the mixer window you can change the view between the inserts (EQ, Dynamics and Tape), Reverb and delay sends, reverb and delay returns and the master section. Below the mixer you can navigate to the Drumkit page, Mix Mix section, Groove Player and MIDI Mapping page. You can also load and save mix presets.
All of the channels come with the standard Kontakt Equaliser which has a 4-band EQ and switchable fixed-bell curves on the low and high end bands.
The midrange comes with adjustable Q settings.
Each channel also comes with a Compressor and Shape control. The Shape tool is fantastic for changing the attack on the drums or reducing the resonance to stop those ringing drums.
It is a great effect for bringing drums forward in the mix. The Compressor comes with all the usual controls you would expect in a decent compressor.
Each channel also has a tape control. You can warm up the sound of each drum with an input and output control and there are also controls that effect the bias and style.
You can re-order the dynamics stage between the compressor / EQ / Shape / Tape at any point.
Each channel comes with four Auxiliary insert sends.
The first two sends are fixed delay sends and the second two sends control the levels to the convolution reverbs.
There are two delays and two convolution reverbs per channel. Each of the delays can control the timing and feedback and it comes with controls for the hicut and spread.
The reverbs have a hi pass and low pass control and controls for pre and size. The convolution reverbs contain a large number of presets sampled from analogue devices such as Grampian Spring reverbs, EMT Plates, AMS reverbs, AKG Springs as well as some room comvolutions from a number of recording studios that Drumdrops uses.
This is another kit which comes into its own with Mic Mix. Because this kit was recorded with 5 microphones (a Kick, snare, two kit mics and a mono overhead) the best way of blending the sound of the drums is by mixing the balance of all 5 mics. For example if you want fine tune the balance of the hi tom you can mix all five microphones to get the sound you want.
Each channel has access to the mic mix section.
The drumkit page shows a full graphical view of the drum kit. On this page you can listen to each drum and the percussion, switch between hotrods, sticks or brushes, access the drum voice section and humanize section and change the velocity curves.
The Drum voice section allows you to edit the attack, hold, decay and tuning on each drum and unload drums you dont want to use from memory. The humanize section allows you to add more realism to the kit by randomly changing the volume, velocity, tuning and timing of the hits. You can further change the sound of the kits by adjusting the velocity curves.
In version two of the kontakt instrument we have totally redesigned the master fader section. The stereo buss now has four dynamics included.
A stereo compressor, limiter, EQ and new Crush section. There is also included a Stereo width control and a L/R swap.
Included is a MIDI Groove player. We have included a large selection of MIDI grooves covering a variety of genres.
In the Vintage Folk Rock Kit we have included 2111 loops played by a variety of our drumdrops drummers.
318 of these loops are Folk Loops played by Martyn Barker.
Once you have found a groove you like and selected it, you can drag it into your DAW.
In version two of the Kontakt instrument we have completely overhauled the MIDI mapping. As usual we include a number of V-drum patches. Within this section it is possible to select whatever MIDI map best suits your needs whether that be General MIDI or a V-Drum map. We have worked really hard at the e-drum compatibility and for the Roland V-Drums and Yamaha DTX-900 this kit works perfectly.
The Roland and Yamaha maps contain MIDI controller data for the hi-hats and in the case of the Rolands, for the snares to work. This may mean that you experience some unusual behavior with regards to the hi-hats if you choose to use these maps with any MIDI files that have not been recorded with an E-Kit. Our V-drum map supports Roland models TD-12, TD-20 and TD-30 but you’ll probably find that either of our E-Drum maps will work with most E-Drums on the market. If they don't, you can use some of the new features in our instrument to make a custom map and make it work seamlessly with your E-Kit. Once you have changed it you can save it in any of the 5 customer presets. For more on the E-Drum compatability check below.
Our Kontakt packs work perfectly with various models of Roland V-Drum Kits and also with the Yamaha DTX-900 Electronic Drum System. The upshot of all this hard work is that anybody who owns these V-Kit models, can just load up the MIDI map for that kit, in the MIDI Map page of our Kontakt pack, and start to play immediately.
However anyone with any other type of E-drum should be able to tune the kit exactly as they want it with our great new MIDI CC data editing page. Our hi-hats have been recorded with six articulations each for the center and the edge of the hi-hat, which will trigger seamlessly as the hi-hat pedal is opened and closed.
The foot pedal articulations will also play back as the pedal is shut, using just your foot. If you own a Roland V-Kit that supports cymbal choking, our instrument is also set up to support cymbal chokes via MIDI. Users can also change the cc data themselves to tweak their E-drum maps.
For anyone who has any other E-Kit, our mapping page now includes a section where you can edit the MIDI controller data that is sent by your E-Kit to the instrument. In this new section you can change and edit various parameters that affect the playback of the snare, hi-hat, and cymbals, depending on what MIDI CC data is transmitted by your E-Kit.
You have the ability to change MIDI CC numbers for the snare and hi-hats so that they can be affected by any controller data. You can activate articulation switching for the snare, if your E-Kit supports this, so that the centre and edge snare hits can be played from the same pad - likewise the rimshot and sidestick.
You can apply different curves to both the centre and the edge hi-hats to affect how much the hi hat opens and closes so that the hi-hats play back perfectly according to your own individual setup.
And finally you can activate cymbal choking if your E-Kit supports this function. The instrument is also capable of learning cymbal chokes should you need to edit them for a different setup. In short you should be able to customise this instrument for any E-drum kit.
The Vintage Folk Rock Kit ships with a number of mix presets included. A number of engineers (including Phill Brown) have saved their own mixes of the kit which you can access by using 'load Mix'. This is a great starting point if you want to quickly and easily get a different sounding kit and tweak it. You can save your own mixes using the 'Save Mix' button. Why not save your own mixes and email us the preset? If we like what we hear we may add your preset to the kit.
Presets Included:
Included in the pack is a full version of the kit accessing all of the samples and a handy lite version. The lite version has all of the features of the full version but does not load the round robin samples. This is perfect for loading up on Laptops where your RAM and speed may be more restricted. Use the Lite version for speed and the full version for quality.
We currently build our packs with the latest version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5 - Minimum 5.5 full version. Please note the Kontakt 5 Free Player will only run the software for 15 minutes.
You need the full version of Kontakt 5 to run our kits. We are looking at releasing kit packs compatible with the Kontakt player in the future.
