Elixer - Laid in Earth
Version: Kontakt 5.8.1 / WAV / V1
Haunting, somber and whimsical sound design library
Download Method: Kontakt Hub
Elixer: Laid in Earth is based on old recordings of the Opera “Dido And Aeneas” by Henry Purcell. Though it is smaller than the previous two Elixers, it still packs a lot of value and potential.
There is a haunting quality to the sounds, and you can go from somber, sad and lonely, to whimsical, strange and quirky without much effort (among other genres). And of course the overall lofi nature of the sounds and effects can take you a lot of places.

Nice gritty sounds with variety and movement
Some lovely organic and gritty sounds in here. Most of them you wouldn't recognise as coming from an opera recording, but that does have a nice haunting lo-fi quality. The movement option gives scope to produce a great amount of variation in the sounds and you can tempo sync the movement in bar lengths. All this for a very good price too.
There are enough reviews and videos to get a good appreciation for this engine from its other incarnations and this version is no less of a performer or a bargain than the others but the sample set is a neat idea and a possible floodgate for future composer/opus based versions. OK by me! Don't stop with classical (do give it a good run, though)---and how about a K6 Drag'N'Drop version?
As near as I can tell, the randomization has been evolving from version to version and here's how Laid in Earth does it:
MAIN PAGE Randomize (or manual voice selection) does not affect VELOCITY SENSITIVITY or sample start points; Snapshot selection (as expected) does.
MOVEMENT PAGE Randomize: No effect.
EFFECTS PAGE Randomize: Everything except the convolution type.
MODULATION PAGE Randomize: Everything except the vertical level bars.
Laid in Earth loads fast, works well, sounds good and has its own cachet---all at a ridiculously low intro price. Randomization and experimentation generally yield results not too far afield from the overall concept of the library so think "niche" and not "nothing else needed." I need another Kontakt noise-maker even quite a bit less than a reason to stop calling them noise makers but I am intrigued with the direction BVA took with this one.
Just buy it
Everything Erick does is gold. The concept for this library is fantastic and at this price it’s a no-brainer.
So many great presets and inspirational sounds. A lot of possibilities to create new sounds as well. A great addition to the Elixer series.
