Product Overview

The concept behind Cassette Piano was to record piano sounds on to cassette (every key x 3 velocities) with a classic old & wonky cassette recorder and compile these 264 samples within a Kontakt instrument with a sleek, simple and synth-like GUI. Every note of this instrument has been carefully denoised with a high quality algorithm to avoid noise stacking when playing more than one note. Noise can still be added with the noise slider - it’s much more flexible this way and allows the ability to adjust the volume of the noise independently whilst also applying parameters such as filtering. It also creates a more realistic sound, so when playing a five voice chord, only one sample of noise instead of five stacked on top of each other will be heard.

If you're unsure whether this is right for you, here's a short example of what's included in Cassette Piano

Every key was sampled in 3 velocities totalling 264 samples then sampled through an old & wonky cassette recorder - that was the most time consuming part of the whole process of creating this instrument (even more time consuming than scripting itself).

I love what it does to audio when I'm sampling something with it but it produces a lot of artifacts both during recording and during playback because it's so old and it hasn't been serviced since my grandfather bought it. Because of that I had the re-record most of the notes over and over again.

After recording every one of the 264 samples they were denoised with high quality denoising algorithms although some of the noise was retained in the samples to avoid artifacts. Then we sampled the cassette noise by itself and wrote a script so it's playing only when you play the instrument.

This way it's much more flexible, because you can adjust the volume of the noise independently and apply filtering, etc.

It's also more realistic, because now when you play a five voice chord you only hear one sample of noise instead of five stacked on top of each other.

It's not the most realistic recreation of a piano instrument but if you like vintage, dusty and characterful sounds and you're looking for something to enhance your production toolbox, then this product might be for you.

Super cool, noisy, wonky keys

Super cool, noisy, wonky keys. Instantly sounds like I'm playing a great crusty piano sample from a 70s track. Nice!
