Product Overview

Though called "Broken Bells," bells are not the only thing that was sampled. While we did sample some traditional bells, we also sampled tibetan singing bowls, kitchen mixing bowls, vases, wine glasses other random objects which gave a "ringing" sound which we thought was cool. We also bowed a variety of objects, including the objects mentioned above, but also a giant tin cylinder which once held the Christmas popcorn from last year. Broken Bells marks the direct opposite to our library Talua since it focuses on the dark and rusty nature of hit and bowed bell tones while Talua carries those crystal sounding glass instruments so if you're in need for that rusty and dirty and also really imperfect bell sounds then Broken Bells is for you.

Broken Bells comes with a simple to use UI only carrying the most essential features like Filter, ADSR, Sound Shaping controls etc. You will see below that it definitely has some interesting features to shape the sounds.

Image supporting SHAPE

The Shape Controls give you a bit deeper control about the sound of the selected instrument. Note that this works for each instrument individually in case you want to dynamically switch between instruments via Keyswitch and set it up inside one patch. You have control over settings like panorama position, advanced sample start point, volume envelope etc. Besides that is there also a filter part where you can for example apply an envelope to to further shape the raw instrument. We did also not include any further effects like delay, chorus etc. since most of the time our customers are using their own gear or plugins and therefore you only get the most essential tone shaping effects. - Body, which is basically a very short convolution reverb to voluminize the overall sound - Tape, which drives the incoming signal from the instruments through a tape saturator - LowPass Filter - Output Amplifier - Master Stereo Width - 3 Band Master Equalizer with limited gain ranges Of course you also have the option to change performance settings like Timing, Vibrato, Velocity or Expression.

More Than Meets The Eye

In addition to tuned percussion tones you get the expected beautiful SAS ambiences and textures, with simple and effective controls in a one-page, straight-forward GUI with a useful info line. There are six main nki instruments with snapshots, a folder of additional nki patches, and some multis. It appears the samples yield 40 different voices/"bells", collected in four groups (2x8 and 2x12), one group per patch. The voices have that organic quality that comes with sampled versus synthesized bells, and resonances are easily controlled with the filter. Only one selected voice sounds per patch, so layering is by multi. The extremely low CPU usage per patch (often not even reaching 1% even on a 32-bit system) allows a lot of patches per multi and the Sample Start and Velocity controls augment the creation of complex multi sounds. There is no arpeggiator (and using the spanner to access Kontakt's arp, etc., likely results in locking out the GUI). If you like experimenting with a snapshot or an nki by selecting different voices within the patch, note that the snapshots and "experimental" nki's only have a single voice activated, so selecting a different voice that will sound requires a Shift-Click (check the info line). The curated variety and low CPU makes it noteworthy and allows it to be a useful complement to any other Kontakt library---and at a bargain price.
